Race recap: Ironman Thun – Olivier Jakob

„I finished 20th in my age category at Ironman Switzerland. It was the first edition in Thun, and the setting was exceptional: nice weather, lake not too cold, beautiful bike course, and a lot of crowd support.

I came out of the water in a surprisingly good time of 54 minutes, which was a  clear personal best for me. However, it appeared that everyone in the race had a personal best for the swim as the course was short of a few meters. The bike course was challenging with 2’200 meters of positive climbing, which made it not dull, and the spectacular view made it easier to ride the distance. Safety on the bike course was excellent, with absolutely no cars. After 5h38 on the bike, I hit the run. I managed a steady pace on the first 15 km, but I lost all power in the second 15km. I refueled as much as possible to find some energy to finish, but that was a struggle. The run proved again to be my weak side and something to improve. The crowd support was exceptional and made this race a special one; that was a great day of racing and emotions.“
